ESCANABA -- On Monday, Marinette Marine officials connected with administrators to discuss how they can increase the skill capacity with students who may fill future jobs.

A group called the Career Connections Group met at Michigan Works in Escanaba.

Marinette Marine has a need for skilled welders to work on their littoral combat ships.  Officials offered suggestions on curriculum to help prepare high schoolers to move on to careers, possibly at Marinette Marine.

"I think a few other things that they need to have are communication skills, math and algebra skills," said Tony Retaskie of the U.P. Construction Council.  "That can take them into careers in construction and welding, and there's a lot of opportunity coming in the Upper Peninsula."

The Career Connections Group also works to expand business and industry involvement with students interested in a variety of careers.
