Officials say drive slower

HOUGHTON -- With the recent heavy snowfall in Houghton County, it’s left the roads very slick and slippery.

Officials say accidents increase significantly during this time of year, and having the proper snow tires or all season tires is crucial in order to decrease your chances of being involved in an accident.

“What we would like to see people do most is just slow down their speeds. Your stopping distance increases so much; people have to take that into account,” said Houghton Chief of Police John Donnelly.

Officials also say the marked speed limits are for dry roads, not icy ones, so it’s very important to reduce your speeds and rethink the amount of time you have before you come to a complete stop.

Even if you’re driving under the speed limit, in these winter conditions, it is still possible to lose control of your vehicle, so remember to be aware of other drivers and slow down.
