One common mistake is unconscious snacking

MARQUETTE -- The holiday season is a time to celebrate with family and friends. But for many, it also becomes a time for overeating and weight gain. Experts say one common mistake is unconscious snacking.

"They aren't conscious of what they're eating, just nibble, nibble here and there," said Laura Gauthier, registered nurse at Marquette County Health Department.

That nibbling can add up. According to the National Institute of Health, holiday eating can result in an extra pound or two every year. And while you shouldn't sacrifice a good meal, experts say be mindful of your calorie intake.

"If you want to enjoy everything at a Thanksgiving feast, a small portion of everything would be a good idea," Gauthier said.

It all goes back to smart holiday shopping:  pack your cart with plenty of fresh vegetables and incorporate healthier ingredients to your recipes.  Try using low sodium in mashed potatoes. Choose reduced fat or non-fat cheeses for salads and casseroles. And substitute applesauce for oil or butter.

With all that holiday cheer, some of our Facebook viewers say it's not about counting calories.

"If you constantly worry about what you eat, then you're never going to enjoy anything! It's a day to spend with family and enjoy the time you have together and share a good meal," said Laura Butler.

"Have a good meal, right, and then be sure to use the leftovers up. That's my theory," said Muriel Stehouwer, a shopper.
