ESCANABA -- Twelve kids at Escanaba Middle School are taking part in a national Fuel up to Play 60 program to help decrease childhood obesity and improve community health.

The student-led program will get a chance to review the school menu and even assist in making healthier changes. They all signed a pledge to make an effort to exercise more and encourage fellow classmates to be more active.

Fuel up to Play 60 was launched by the National Football League and the National Dairy Council.  The students are currently planning a kickoff in December.

"Um, we should think about taking away junk food and not sitting on the couch or being on the computer that long," said Play 60 participant Elizabeth Taylor.  "They should be getting outside so we can get the fresh air and be active. We should have fun."

Linda Klope, a registered dietician at OSF St. Francis, is also assisting the students in the physical activity program.
