HOUGHTON -- Around 170 middle school students were at the Dollar Bay School Wednesday morning to participate in a woodwind clinic.

Every year the Keweenaw Music Educators Association hosts musical clinics for middle school students.

Keweenaw Music Educators Association is made up of music teachers from public schools in the surrounding area who specialize in playing instruments.

"We're surrounded by music all the time," said music teacher Cheryl DeLong.  "It's a multi-billion dollar industry in this nation, and kids should know about music, not to mention the aesthetic beauty and how good it is for them to study music."

Sixth, seventh, and eighth grade students who play the clarinet, flute, and saxophone received tips on finger placements, the fundamentals of tone production, and articulation.  These young musicians are continuing to learn more about their instruments and hone their skills.

A brass clinic is currently being planned for next year.
