Volunteers discussed Ojibwa history and culture, focusing on natural resources that are used by the Native Americans
MARQUETTE -- History buffs got a dose of Native American background Sunday at the Moosewood Nature Center in Presque Isle. Volunteers from the center provided those who attended with information on Ojibwa history and culture, focusing on natural resources that are used by the Native Americans.
Several people took part in crafting out of birch tree parts and had a taste of a traditional native dish made with resources found on the island: wild rice, wild cranberries and blueberries. The group also took a one-hour bog walk.
"The common misconception today is that native people are gone, which is definitely not true," said volunteer Carolyn Harwood. "The native culture, here in the Upper Peninsula especially, is still very much alive and vibrant, and it's important that we see that and respect that because we can learn from that culture just as that culture can learn from our culture."
The nature center has similar events planned in the near future.
