Traffic crash in Delta County leaves two dead

DELTA COUNTY -- Two Rapid River residents lost their lives in a traffic fatality Wednesday afternoon.

According to the Michigan State Police out of Gladstone, a vehicle, driven east on US-2 near US-41 by Blanche Johnson of Rapid River, lost control on the slushy highway, continued across the centerline and struck a westbound vehicle driven by Michael Manderfield of Kaukauna, Wisconsin.

The Johnson and her passenger, Virginia Schmitt also of Rapid River, were pronounced dead at the scene.

Manderfield was transported to OSF St. Francis.  There is no word on his condition.

Troopers were assisted by Gladstone and Escanaba Public Safety, Masonville Township First Responders, the Delta County Sheriff's Department and the Delta County Victim's Advocate.

All occupants of the vehicles were wearing their seatbelts.  The accident remains under investigation, and the police are asking anyone who may have witnessed the crash to call the Michigan State Police Gladstone Post at (906) 428-4411.
