MARQUETTE -- Michigan snowmobilers will have to pay a little more to get a trail permit this year, however, that money will go to improve trails.
Trail permits will increase this year by $10 bringing the purchase price up to $45.
A state law signed in 2008 provided for the rate increase which will support trail maintenance and grooming along with long-term infrastructure needs, such as bridges and culverts.
The increase is supported by the Michigan Snowmobile Association and the Department of Natural Resources.
"This actually came from the snowmobilers; they want to see the best trails that they can in Michigan. The local snowmobile clubs are dependent on this money; it gives them the money for grooming, so it's something that they all supported and, of course, it works for us because we facilitate that trail system," said Debbie Munson Badini of the DNR.
The price for a trail permit will remain at $45 through 2015.
