SAWYER -- Fifth graders at Sawyer Elementary honored the nation's veterans Tuesday morning with a stage performance.

Students, family members, and veterans packed the gym to watch the hour-long presentation that included songs, history readings and a candle lighting ceremony.  During the show, pictures of veterans from the community were projected on the wall.

Organizers say the event was especially meaningful as many of the students have a personal connection with those serving in uniform.

"A lot of our students have actual family members who have been overseas.  They have a good connection whether it be a family member or friend.  They understand what it means to be a vet and the sacrifice they made," said teacher Connie Usher.

The fifth grade class holds this kind of assembly annually as part of its U.S. History curriculum.
