The newspapers document the Finnish-American experience of immigrants

HANCOCK -- The first Finnish-American newspaper was printed in Hancock in 1879.  Keeping this recorded history is one of the main goals of the Finnish-American Heritage Center.  They recently received 20th century newspapers from the Immigration History Research Center.

"A story only lasts as long as people tell it," said Haven Hawley, director of the Immigration History Research Center.  "In order to have the story of your heritage last, it has to continue being passed on, and a big way we can keep it is to have the physical materials so you can read those words."

These newspapers documented the Finnish-American experience from their journey to America to how they lived their lives in the '30s and '50s.  All of the items will be archived in the center.
