MUNISING -- Before speaking at Northern Michigan University Wednesday morning, Senator Carl Levin paid a visit to Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore.

This was the senators first visit since the repaving of County Road H-58 last year.  According to park officials Levin was instrumental in securing funds for the road, which has increased traffic flow to the park.

Levin says local business owners have told him they've seen an uptick in commerce since the road was rebuilt.

"He has provided opportunities for quiet and solitude and enjoying nature forever and ever here at Pictured Rocks," said Park Superintendent Jim Northup.

"It's a plus economically but access for people to come and see the beauty of this place is really what it's all about," said Senator Levin.

Park officials estimate nearly 500,000 people visit the Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore every year.
