More than 100 people participated in the run/walk to end breast cancer
NEGAUNEE -- As part of the Make a Difference Day, more than 100 participants gathered in Negaunee for "Ready, Set, Go Pink" Saturday morning.
The 5-K run and two mile walk is a fundraiser to help support the 2012 Avon Walk for breast cancer. This is the first year for the event.
Dozens of volunteers from local high schools, middle schools and churches came together at the Iron Ore Heritage Trail to support the event. Coordinators say the turnout has exceeded their expectations.
"It's so important for us to just help raise money for awareness and early detection," said Tina McCorkle, event coordinator. "Every three minutes, a person is diagnosed with breast cancer; the statistic is one in eight is diagnosed with breast cancer. We are just amazed at how many people we've had come out."
Money raised will send the event coordinators to next year's Avon walk.
