MARQUETTE -- Two local hospitals wrapped up their training for mass burn casualties Tuesday at Marquette General Hospital.

Staff from MGH and Portage Health spent the last two days learning how to prepare and take care of burn victims.

Professionals from the State of Michigan Burn Coordinating Center visited the U.P. to teach 40 of the medical professionals the techniques for a mass burn incident.

This training is critical to the U.P. because of its location and limited resources.

"It's important to have local hospitals step up to the plate and provide emergency care, not just for a couple hours, but for several days in a mass casualty incident," said Medical Director, Dr. Stewart Wang.

MGH and Portage Health are now considered burn surge facilities of the U.P. and will be able to take care of multiple burn patients.
