Wetmore Pond hosts a cranberry workshop

WETMORE POND -- Cranberries are most popular around the holiday season, and now they're ripe for the picking during the first three weeks of October at Wetmore Pond.

A cranberry workshop was held there Saturday.  After a short hike out to the pond, harvesters searched through the marshy area for the best cranberries, which are high in vitamin C.

"Cranberries are very high in antioxidants.  They also have antibacterial qualities," said Aurora Ryan, Moosewood Nature Center volunteer.  "Some people think they prevent urinary tract infections and other diseases like cancer and other chronic illnesses."

Cranberries can be eaten raw or cooked as a jam or sauce.  The berries have a tart flavor.
