MARQUETTE COUNTY -- Is your water safe to drink?

Municipal water is tested regularly to make sure it's safe.  But a variety of hazards can contaminate privately-owned well water, from septic systems to fertilizer products.

The Marquette County Health Department recommends testing samples of your water for contaminants indicated by coliform bacteria.

"You're looking at an organism that typically isn't in groundwater, but is in other environments.  With nitrates, the main issue is if you live in an area that has a shallow aquifer with coarse soils, you can get nitrate contamination," said Patrick Jacuzzo of the Marquette County Health Department's Environmental Health Division.

You can check for bacteria and nitrates at the Marquette water filtration plant and the Ishpeming area wastewater treatment facility.
