NEGAUNEE -- School buses in Negaunee took a little detour from school this morning.

Students at Lakeview Elementary School were dropped off at the corner of Croix and Pine Streets and walked the rest of the way.

The second annual Safe Routes to School event is in honor of the national "Walk to School" month.  Nearly 700 kids from preschool to 5th grade participated in the walk aimed at raising fitness in the youth.

"Basically it's promoting fitness and wellness and, you know, to help with childhood obesity which is on the rise," said Event Coordinator, Diane Faust.  "So it's a program where we're using the sidewalks, promoting biking and walking to school."

School officials want to extend the healthy habit this spring with bike give-aways.
