NEGAUNEE -- Young people were out on an unusual bear hunt in Upper Michigan on Thursday. Sixth graders from the Negaunee Middle School took youngsters from the Negaunee Co-op Preschool to the Heritage Trail to hunt for teddy bears and teach them about fire safety.
Sixth graders placed bears along the trail along with fire safety tips.
The preschoolers have been learning about fire safety while the middle schoolers have been learning about fire safety and bears. Organizers say it's a great way to teach the middle school students the importance of community service and mentoring.
"They don't know much about it so we can tell them, like how they can do the safety things so they don't get hurt, or they can go to an adult and tell them what happened," said sixth grader, Davis Bagley.
After the hunt, all the kids had a picnic in the park together.
