ESCANABA -- October is SIDS Awareness Month, and the Welcome Newborn Coordinator at the Michigan State University Extension in Escanaba is training parents to help prevent this tragedy.

Sudden Infant Death Syndrome used to be referred to as crib death.

Lannie Berg educates parents on safe sleep environment for babies.  She advises parents to place babies on their backs to sleep.  Make sure there is no loose blanket.

Instead, she recommends wrapping babies in a wearable blanket that MSU-Extension distributes for free.

"You must check the baby to make sure they don't become overheated," said Berg.  "Because most of the babies that they find who have died from SIDS are sweaty.  So you want to check them at naptime and nighttime."

Beverly Reynolds and one-month-old baby Wesley practiced a safe sleep environment during the session.  Babies 12 months and under are at an especially high risk of SIDS.
