HANCOCK -- Finlandia University has decided to close down their swimming pool for this academic year.

The school is locking the facility's doors on the first of October.  The university's enrollment reduction this year is a main factor in the decision.

Community residents have been the primary patrons using the pool at the Paavo Nurmi Center at Finlandia.  The university does not have a swim team, and it has not offered swimming classes since 2006.

Next year, staff will evaluate the use of the pool and decide whether or not it will be opened again or if the space will be used for different purposes.

"We have to make these decisions which are going to be most effective and efficient for us to operate," said Athletic Director Chris Salani.  "This year we have to make this tough decision, obviously being a difficult one, because we have a number of routine and regular patrons that have supported the use of the pool for many, many years, and we obviously want to thank them for their patronage."

Those with pre-paid memberships for the pool should contact the facility manager.
