IRON MOUNTAIN -- Several medical facilities in the U.P. have been recognized by the Joint Commission as top performing hospitals.
The Oscar Johnson VA and Dickinson County Healthcare System, both in Iron Mountain, received the recognition. Aspirus Grand View Hospital in Ironwood also made the list.
Four-hundred-five hospitals nationwide were recognized, including 10 in Michigan.
The Oscar Johnson VA earned the distinction by improving care for pneumonia patients.
VA officials say they're happy to receive the recognition.
"Well, it means a great deal, but it also means that the processes that we have in place are working. We are a patient-centered care facility, and that's our goal, and it means we are making progress in that area," said VA Public Affairs Officer, Brad Nelson.
Of the 405 hospitals recognized nationwide, only 89 are from rural communities like the U.P.
