Christians in Marquette County came together in both patriotism and faith on Sunday evening
MARQUETTE -- Members of area churches of all religions, Lutheran, Episcopalian, Presbyterian, Catholic, and Methodist, worshipped at Saint Peter's Cathedral in Marquette.
Organizers of the mass wanted those in attendance to pray for peace while honoring the heroes of the day and remembering the victims.
"We're all affected by the events of September 11th," says Bishop Thomas Skrenes of the Northern Great Lakes Synod. "Our nation, our community, the men and women who have served our country in the last ten years; we are not far from the events of New York City, Washington, D.C. and rural Pennsylvania, and our part is to remember and to lift up and to encourage peacemaking and reconciliation."
"I think it's important that we don't forget, that we remember," says MGH paramedic Gary Gustafson. "I think that having this sort of a ceremony really kind of brings everybody together. If something were to happen, you know we're brothers even though we're so far away, we all put ourselves at risk to help others. It just comes with the nature of the job."
This was the first time for the combined ecumenical memorial service on 9/11 in Marquette County.
