A long time staple in schools across Dickinson County is in danger of being cancelled
DICKINSON COUNTY -- The Drug Abuse Resistance Education program, better known as DARE, helps keep students safe from drugs and violence.
After the state cut funding in 2000, the program became a collaboration between the Sheriff's Department and Dickinson County Schools. But due to budget constraints, the schools pulled their funding last year.
Now community members are raising money to keep the program alive.
"I feel as a law enforcement officer that it's very important," says Dickinson County Sheriff Scott Celello. "The problem is DARE is one of those programs where you don't have a definitive answer as does it work or not? There's no way to keep track of any statistics or anything like that."
Celello says the funding will need to be in place by the middle of September to prevent the program from being cancelled.
