HOUGHTON -- Members of the Houghton and Hancock City Councils approved a sewer connection proposal at a joint meeting Wednesday night.  The proposal is part of a collaboration phase asked by the state to get revenue sharing money back.

Under the plan, Franklin Township will connect its sewer system to the Portage Lake Water and Sewage Authority treatment plant.  The proposal also included 25 existing collaboration plans between the two towns.

The sewer connection proposal is one of three steps presented to the state to complete the process.

"First thing is a dashboard where you have to put your financial status on your website, make it available to your residents in a real simple form," said Houghton City Manager Scott MacInnes.  "Second is the cooperation agreement...are you cooperating between other units of government?  And the third thing will be based upon health care retirement plans."

The proposal was signed by both mayors and will be sent to Lansing for review.
