Starting a clean slate

NIAGARA -- After a very public battle over education in Madison last spring, teachers and students alike are looking for a clean slate.

Thursday was the first day of school for students throughout Wisconsin.  Niagara, like many Wisconsin schools, is dealing with a much tighter budget due to the new laws.  The administration is working closely with teachers to make the cuts as painless as possible, but in the end, getting back into the classroom is a welcome distraction for many.

"It definitely feels good to get back into the flow of things," said Niagara Superintendent Dan Nett.  "Ultimately, teachers love their craft and they like helping children.  So I think to get back to work and get back into being busy is important for everyone, kids and professions."

Michigan students get to enjoy the holiday weekend before going back to school on September 6.
