The fair continues Saturday and Sunday
NEWBERRY -- The Luce West Mackinac County Fair is a celebration of the unique culture and close knit community of the eastern U.P.
"We're really friendly here. A lot of the bigger fairs, you don't get to know anybody, you don't get to see the people that actually own the animals. Here, the kids will take you around, show you their animals, let you pet them," says Sherry Aldrich, Luce West Mackinac County Fair President.
You should know that this is predominantly a livestock fair--there's cows, goats, and of course, pigs, all on display for you to meet.
One of the more interesting animals at the county fair are the fainting goats. When fainting goats get scared, their muscles tense up, which causes them to fall over!
But these animals aren't just for show, they're there to compete. Rabbits are among the 50 different breeds of animals competing over the course of fair weekend.
"There are several things we look for, primarily weight is key, we look for coloring, the toe nails all have to be the same color," says Terry Webb, who is judging the rabbits.
The contests are also an opportunity for kids to learn how to better care for their animals, and of course, get lots and lots of ribbons.
The fair continues Saturday and Sunday and admission is three dollars per car.
