HOUGHTON COUNTY -- The death of 54-year-old Valerie Sue Palmer remains under investigation after authorities discovered her body on the west shore of Torch Bay Wednesday night.
Palmer had been missing since Saturday night after she was last seen in Houghton at a Wells Fargo Bank near Michigan Tech. Her disappearance prompted a search by local law enforcement as well as Superior Search and Rescue, Civil Air Patrol and the Coast Guard.
Authorities are still investigating whether or not Palmer died on land or water.
"We were advised by dispatch at ten after seven last night that a body was discovered floating in Torch Bay near the Bootjack shore," said Houghton County Sheriff Brian McLean. "So, subsequent as the officers arrive, we did identify it as our missing person and positively identified, and the medical examiner is now going over the case."
According to the Houghton County Sheriff's Department, she was found within a short distance from the boat that police say had her belongings in it.
