MUNISING -- A water boil advisory has been issued for the City of Munising after coliform bacteria was found in two water samples taken in August.
This confirmation of coliform bacteria violates a drinking water standard, which only allows one sample out of five to test positive for the bacteria.
Coliform bacteria is not generally harmful themselves but can be an indication of other bacteria present in the system, including E. coli.
As a precaution, residents should boil water for one minute and let it cool before using. Officials are encouraging the use of boiled and bottled water until further notice.
A chlorine disinfectant is being administered to the system, and a notification will be sent when water is safe again for consumption, according to officials.
