Pell grant funding could be cut

IRON MOUNTAIN -- College students should keep a close eye on Congress as they debate ways to cut the nation's debt over the next few months.

The newly formed Congressional Debt Reduction Committee is expected to target federal funding like Pell grants for college students.

Locally, reduction in Pell grant funding could have a major affect on students at Bay College West.  Executive Dean Patrick Kennedy says two-thirds of Bay West students rely on funding from Pell grants to pay for their education.

"These programs help our students, help residents of this area to get to school, to get training they need, to get into the work force," said Kennedy.  "To cut that in any significant way is going to have a huge impact."

There is no word on a timetable for when these issues may be tackled.
