MARQUETTE -- When you think of roughing it in the outdoors, you might not think of how to rough it more easily. But that's the subject of a brand new day camp this week at the Moosewood Nature Center in Marquette.
At the Roughing It Day Camp, 12 kids, ages 8 to 12, are learning all the basics of cooking outside. They'll learn how to cook over an open fire, use solar power, and tin cans. They also helped make the fire.
Organizers say it's fun, but practical.
"I think it's fun to be able to cook outdoors and also, if you are going camping, then you'll be able to do something for yourself rather than just bring along trail mix or something like that," said co-organizer, Elizabeth Dabis.
"My mom wants to learn so I guess I might teach her. I am really good at cutting, so I like to chop the vegetables," said eight-year-old camper, Iris Oswald.
Although the camp is full this summer, there are hopes to hold the day camp again next year.
