Business Venture Camp is teaching kids real-life job skills
ESCANABA -- It can be tough to find a job in this economy, but a group of Delta County kids are already preparing for the workforce. The young entrepreneurs are taking part in a 4-H sponsored Business Venture Camp that's teaching them real-life strategies.
What was the first step?
“You start off with a small business or your own idea, and then you create something,” explains candlemaker, Pierce Maybille, “and then you just go off from there."
Pierce is one of seven other kids who had to pitch product ideas that they're now working hard to create, products like woodburned art, checkbook covers, and chocolate treats.
"The business stuff I could use to make my own business when I’m older. And the crayons, maybe that will be my business, and I’ll already know how to do it," Maybille said.
There's risk involved in any start-up business. But the kids have brainstormed to create effective goals; like who is your target audience and what obstacles need to be overcome? They've even had to plan advertising and applying for a loan.
But the best part is seeing all their hard work turn into cash.
The kids will also be at the U.P. State Fair on Youth Day. Judges will come in, the kids will have to explain their product, and they'll also get a chance to win prize money.
