UPPER PENINSULA -- Comparing the second week of August to the first one shows quite a difference in temperature. The first week it was 41 degrees warmer than normal, overall; the second week, only two degrees above normal. Has the summer heat finally retreated?
For now, yes. Throughout the next week, there are no signs in the forecast for unseasonably warm temperatures like we saw earlier this month. In fact, we'll be seeing temperatures much closer to normal values.
For this weekend, we'll expect our weather to get nicer. Saturday will generally be cloudy. But as the area of low pressure to the southeast drifts off to the east, we'll become under the influence of a ridge of high pressure to the west.
This will bring mostly sunny skies for Sunday into Tuesday.
With the added sunshine, we could see our high temperatures warm into the lower 80s for Tuesday and Wednesday as the high pressure system brings southerly flow. But that's still seasonably warm, with the normal temperatures for this time of year in the mid-70s, and should be expected since it's still summer.
Without the cloud cover and with calmer winds, we could see a couple of cooler nights ahead. Generally, lows will be in the seasonable 50s.
But, as the center of high pressure approaches the area over the next few days from the west, some of the overnight low temperatures could cool into the upper 40s for the inland areas away from the lake influence.
We're still in quite the drought with our precipitation over four inches below normal so far this year. And the rain system this weekend won't provide a lot of rainfall. But there's another chance for rain during the middle and end of next week. Hopefully, we can get some rain from that to bring us back to more normal values.
