KEWEENAW COUNTY -- The Keweenaw County Sheriff's Department has confirmed the two hikers missing since Tuesday morning have been found.
A search and rescue plane spotted a fire on the ground and a man waving at the plane just west of Copper Lake.
It took rescue teams approximately 45 minutes to reach the pair after spotting them in a densely wooded area.
Twenty-six-year-old Elizabeth Hunter of Holly, Michigan and 22-year-old James Murphy of Fenton started their hike from High Rock Bay on Friday and were expected to arrive at Smiths Fisheries on Monday. A car had been waiting for the couple at that location. A note had also been left in the car in case the hikers returned.
Officials say the couple had gone through rough terrain.
"They hadn't made a lot of headway in two days, so they obviously were having trouble with their hike," said Keweenaw County Sheriff Rob Lahti. "It's a rough terrain, the shore is not easy to walk even if you get off the shore, the woods are very thick. Tough going up there."
Rescue teams are currently assisting the couple in getting out of the area.
