BARK RIVER -- Nine volunteer horse trainers from Wisconsin and lower Michigan are rehabilitating surrendered horses and preparing them for new homes.

Pipers Rescue Ranch and Food 4 Our Horses in Bark River are working together for the second annual Trainers Challenge 4 Horses without Homes.

Eleven horses have been trained in companionship qualities and how to respect handlers.  Many of them were surrendered from neglectful environments.

Organizers said they're hoping all the horses can find a home at the live auction, which takes place after the competition.

"There's so much failure out there with people just passing pets along and never investing any time in them," said Food 4 Our Horses owner Jill McDermott.  "It's something we're trying to end, and I think this is the way to do it."

The horses range from 4 to 16 years old.

The event will be held August 13 at the Dickinson County Fairgrounds in Norway.
