The big losses in the stock market Thursday are signaling a volatile market lies ahead for investors
Friday's report showed a strong gain early in the day, however, those gains were quickly erased.
By the end of the day, the Dow finished higher, although the Nasdaq was lower.
Officials are saying the recent debt ceiling debate, along with high unemployment numbers, are a reason for the recent instability, but this current situation is not like what we saw two years ago.
"This is more of a reaction to that; they thought the economy would be gaining strength by now, and it doesn't look like that is going to happen. I think that's a pretty natural thing," says financial consultant Douglas LaBar.
Financial consultants recommend those with vested interests in the market, like 401-K retirement accounts, should look closely at their portfolios and look for stocks that are non-cyclical and pay good dividends.
