MARQUETTE -- The Marquette Department of Natural Resources is asking residents to help with the moose situation on Presque Isle.
DNR officials have been observing the moose over the past week and have noticed that the moose is very thin and appears to be sick. The possible illness may be liver flukes.
Officials say that the public can help the moose simply by leaving it alone, which will give it time to recuperate.
"Really, it is kind of in the public's hand at this point, to leave that animal alone and keep people back away from it," said Wildlife Biologist Brian Roell. "If you do see someone approach it, remind them that what they are doing could ultimately cause the death of the animal."
As far as how to get the moose off the island, officials are hoping nature will take its course. However, if the moose's condition continues to deteriorate or there is a threat to the public, options, such as tranquilizing and relocating or even euthanizing, will be considered.
