MARQUETTE -- Construction of a new waterfront hotel at Founders Landing is taking longer than anticipated.
City commissioners attended a special work session early Tuesday to survey the progress at the site.
Now a year into construction, the management team acknowledges progress has been slow. They're running into problems with groundwater and debris in the soil. The area was used as a dumping ground for charred debris after the fire of 1868 in Marquette. In the meantime, the boardwalk will remain closed throughout the summer.
"This is a heavy construction site," said Chief Architect Barry Polzin. "Certainly there are some hazards. There are poles in the ground right now. As the building goes up, there'll be cranes in operation. So there's a lot of things moving around. Like any construction site, it's a hazardous area."
The seven million dollar hotel is scheduled to be completed sometime early next year. The Hampton Inn will be three stories with 84 rooms.
Adjacent to the hotel, there will also be condos, retail shops, and restaurants.
