Next boot camp begins July 25
HOUGHTON -- Emily Johnson may not look like a drill sergeant, but she is whipping people into shape as one of two instructors in the new Adventure Boot Camp program. Taking advantage of the warm weather and local beauty, the classes rotate locations for each outdoor workout.
"Each day we do something different," says Johnson. "Some days we focus on cardio, others it's strength training or a circuit setup. For instance, we use the stairs and on each step, you do a different thing, like a push-up, a squat or a lunge. So all different fitness levels are challenged."
Nearly 40 people signed up for the two classes in the first boot camp session, which is in its fifth and final week.
"We go from 6:30-7:15 a.m. and 7:30-8:15 a.m. and you can choose either," Johnson says. "It runs Monday through Thursday, so you get the three-day weekend off for rest."
Despite an intense schedule, participants say they're having fun while working towards their fitness goals.
"I have an eight month old baby at home as well as two other children, and I just really wanted to get back into shape," says Adrienne Hernandez. "I figured the best way would be to just jump right into something."
"It’s been very rewarding," says Dena Yrjana. "I'm proud to say that I'm a part of this, and it feels like you're part of a team with all the other girls. I'd recommend it to everyone."
Anyone interested in joining the boot camp can still sign up for the second session which begins on July 25.
