Most areas of the U.P. will hit 90 degrees
IRON RIVER -- Heat advisories are in place for much of the Central and Western U.P. Sunday.
TV6 meteorologists are predicting that Sunday will be the warmest day we've had yet this summer, and those kind of conditions can become dangerous. Most areas will hit the 90s around noon.
"There's a range of heat-related illness, starting with just heat cramps up to heat stroke," says North Star Health Systems ER Physician Elizabeth Mackey.
Heat stroke can be fatal and requires immediate emergency medical attention. It occurs when the body's temperature regulation fails and exceeds 106 degrees. The individual can become confused, tired and can progress to actually having a seizure.
There are warning signs before your body will reach that point, such as profuse sweating, weakness, nausea, headache, lightheadedness or muscle cramps.
There is no magic number of how long it's safe to be outside; the elderly and very young can be more sensitive to heat, as well as people on certain medications.
There are things everyone can do to protect themselves.
"Wear lightweight, light color clothing, something breathable that's loose," Mackey says.
North Star Health Systems says very rarely do they see patients in the ER who are experiencing symptoms due to heat.
