REPUBLIC -- Anglers are gearing up for the 21st annual Fishing Derby in Republic. The Fishing Derby will take place on the Michigamme River July 16 and 17.
There will be a parade prior to the derby on Friday at 6 p.m. and a bonfire on Saturday.
Fishermen will hit the waters at 6 a.m. on Saturday and try for the $1,000 prize walleye until 8 p.m., then back in on Sunday at 7 a.m. In addition to the top prize walleye, there will also be several cash prizes for other fish such as pike, perch and bass.
Organizers expect over 400 participants this year, with several coming back year after year.
"We got a lot of youngsters that started when they were two or three years old and they're still coming back, a lot of them from Illinois and Wisconsin," said organizer Charles Hendrickson.
There is a $15 entry fee for adults, but kids under 12 fish for free.
