UPPER PENINSULA -- Got weekend plans? Bring an umbrella or raincoat.
The forecast calls for rainshowers and thunderstorms on Saturday and Sunday. The rain won't start on Saturday until the afternoon and evening. The storms will stick around for most of the day on Sunday.
There is also a severe weather threat as these storms make their way over the area.
For Saturday, the threat remains mostly to the West over the Keweenaw Peninsula and areas near Gogebic and Ontonagon counties. And on Sunday, the threat slides eastward to affect the central U.P. in areas like Menominee, Iron, Delta, Dickinson, Marquette, Schoolcraft, and Alger counties.
The main severe threat with these storms will be strong winds and damaging hail.
It's been a dry start to the month, though. We've only had 0.05" of rainfall since July 1. Normally from July 1 to July 8, we would get 0.80" of rain.
All of the rain is associated with a passing frontal system. Once it all passes the area on Monday, we can expect a calmer and cooler weather pattern. Don't expect it to get too chilly, it's the summer, remember? The temperatures will moderate closer to normal values later on in the week.
