MARQUETTE COUNTY -- The Marquette County Triad has set a July 15 registration deadline for the county's National Night Out gatherings.

National Night Out events encourage residents and communities to come together for block parties and barbeques.

The aim is to have local police and firefighters attend registered events, get to know the community and address safety concerns.

"National Night Out is to heighten crime and drug awareness," said Stacey Rasanen of the Michigan State Police.  "It strengthens the communities and their spirit.  "It sends a message to the criminals letting them know that neighborhoods are organized and willing to fight back."

Triad anticipates 15 to 20 parties across the country from August 1 to 10.

Those interested in registering should call the Retired and Senior Volunteer Program at (906) 485-1782.
