80,000 customers remained without power Sunday afternoon
DEARBORN HEIGHTS (AP) -- Michigan utility crews are working to restore power to tens of thousands of homes and businesses after severe thunderstorms hit the southeastern corner of the state, generating two-inch hail and winds gusting to 64 miles per hour that knocked down trees and power lines and blacked out 125,000 customers.
Saturday's outages came as air conditioners struggled to cope with record-setting heat, which reached 99 degrees in Detroit. That broke a 100-year-old record of 98.
DTE Energy Co. says 80,000 homes and businesses remain without service Sunday afternoon, and some may have to wait till Tuesday to regain power.
The hardest hit areas include Dearborn Heights and Dearborn, west of Detroit.
The National Weather Service reports two-inch hail fell in Ypsilanti, with 64 mpg wind gusts in Romulus.
