Because of dogs' sensitive hearing, they can be very afraid of the loud boom that fireworks make
NEGAUNEE TOWNSHIP -- Communities across the U.P. are enjoying fireworks displays this weekend as part of their holiday celebration. But those fireworks that we enjoy so much could be very frightening for certain pets.
Upper Peninisula Animal Welfare Shelter (UPAWS) employees say they often get calls from people reporting missing dogs the day after fireworks. They'll also get a lot of stray dogs in around that time.
So how can you help to keep your dog comfortable this Fourth of July?
"If they are going to be outside, I'd definitely recommend to keep them tied up on a leash, maybe give them a place that they can feel comfortable, where they'll lay down and get some cover, if they are going to be outside," says UPAWS supervisor Theresa Wipperman. "Otherwise, I think the best place for them would be inside."
At home, UPAWS advises to close all windows and crank up the air conditioning to drown out the loud noise of the fireworks.
They have had cases where dogs were so frightened of the noise they would jump through screens in windows.
