HANCOCK -- A Painesdale man is jailed after a police chase in Houghton County.

According to the Houghton County Sheriff's Department, it started with an assault complaint at 4:50 a.m. Sunday in Calumet.

While responding to that call, deputies saw a vehicle heading south on US-41 that matched the alleged assault suspect's vehicle.  They turned to follow the vehicle near Electric Park Road in Osceola Township.  Deputies saw the vehicle swerving across the road and tried to pull the driver over.  Instead, he took off at a high rate of speed.

The chase ended in Hancock after deputies, working with both Hancock and Houghton City Police, boxed the vehicle in near the Copper Crown Hotel.

The 32-year-old driver was taken into custody for fleeing and eluding and operating while intoxicated.

The alleged assault is still under investigation.
