LPGA pros enjoy U.P. support
HARRIS -- This weekend's tournament marks the halfway point in the LPGA Futures Tour.
The pros represent 36 countries and 39 U.S. states. The tournament is expected to draw around 2,000 people Friday and 3,500 people both Saturday and Sunday.
“We just enjoy watching those young people hit the ball so far and so long,” explains spectator, Jane LeClaire. “It's just amazing to watch them."
And what does the extra attention mean for the community?
“I think they're going to see that what we have to offer is really high quality,” explains tournament chairman, Tony Mancilla. “I mean, our golf course is ranked number 13 in the state. When you see our golf course, you see the casino and you see Escanaba. You’ll see we have a lot to offer up here."
But the golfers were also impressed by the U.P. hospitality.
Daniela lacobelli has played in eleven tournaments as a professional, and this was her first tournament in Michigan.
“I personally love a crowd,” said Iacobelli. “So the more the better. And judging by the way this tournament's been marketed, there should be a pretty good turnout. So I’m hoping to see a lot of people on the fairways, a lot of people behind the greens. And hopefully we can give them some shots to clap for."
Ten LPGA cards will be presented to the top ten finishers with $15,400 awarded to the tournament winner.
