MANISTIQUE -- There's no guarantee that a business will be successful, but that's part of the gamble.
There's even more risk when you gain ownership of an already established business...especially when it's all new to you.
On June 20th, Chris will sign the papers to become the new owner of the Apple Barrel.
Owning the Manistique convenience store is a dream come true for him.
“Just to be my own boss,” explains soon-to-be-owner, Chris Spettel. “I’ve always wanted to just run my own business and do my own thing. Something like that always intrigued me. Finally I have the opportunity."
Michigan Works has opened up a new "Center of Excellence" site in Manistique.
It's the first of 40 planned U.P. sites that will assist business owners with things like counseling and getting loans.
“They've helped him with his business plan,” explains Jake Steinhauer of Michigan Works. “They've helped him secure financials. He’s also worked with the Schoolcraft Economic Development Corporation on some funds for the site development and things like that as well."
However, the help doesn't stop there.
Michigan Works will also post job slots online and find Chris additional employees if needed.
“That plays a huge role in the Upper Peninsula's economy,” said Steinhauer. “We see this as another way to enhance the entrepreneurship and those services here and obviously, in turn, hopefully enhance the economy."
