MANISTIQUE -- Police rescued two people caught in a rip current in Lake Michigan off the Boardwalk Beach in Manistique.

Just before 5:30 Wednesday evening, an 11-year-old boy and his 12-year-old sister were on a boogie board playing in the surf when a rip current pulled them into deep water.

Their father entered the water to rescue the children.  He, too, was unable to escape the rip current.

The 12-year-old daughter managed to make it to shore and called 911.

A Manistique Public Safety officer and a Sault Tribal officer rescued the father and son using a rope secured to the shore.

The father and son were taken to Schoolcraft Memorial Hospital for treatment of hypothermia.
