HOUGHTON -- For many people, Memorial Day weekend is not only the unofficial start of summer but also the beginning of outdoor grilling season.
If you don't have a grill of your own and are dreaming of a holiday cookout, it’s a great time to get a good deal.
It's been a busy week at the Sears store in Houghton where the grills range in price from $170-$700.
"Most of the time we sell LP gas grills,” says co-owner Cathy Dennis. “Those are nice because they're portable, and sometimes people have them at home or take them to camp or to a tailgate party."
The store also stocks a number of grilling accessories, everything from outdoor covers to LED lights.
"We have a new steam brush that you fill up with water and heat up the grill for 10 minutes and then run the brush across it,” Dennis says. “We also have a fork that'll take a reading to tell when your meat is done, so all the guess work is taken out of it."
Of course grilling wouldn't be much fun without the proper ingredients. Many people have been filling their carts with the bargains at Econo Foods.
"We’ve seen people buying more corn on the cob and steaks, a lot of Vollwerth's hot dogs, chips, potato salad--pretty much anything you'd want for a picnic or backyard barbeque," says store manager Larry Shoaff.
Shoaff says the store’s shelves are fully stocked for this weekend's rush. He also wants to remind customers that they'll be open all day as usual on Monday, in case anyone needs to pick up some last minute supplies.
