MARQUETTE -- The decision by the Marquette County Reapportionment Board to redistrict the county for the 2012 elections will be undergoing legal action in the form of a lawsuit.
A few weeks ago, the board voted to reduce the number of county commissioners from nine to five.
Marquette County residents are now working with area attorneys to file a lawsuit to appeal that decision.
"I felt it was my duty to volunteer and represent us all here in Marquette County," said Bill Luetzow, President of the Marquette Township Association. "We're hoping for the chance to stay at nine or more, as representation. That's the bottom line is representation of all the townships, because we're the biggest county in the state."
The deadline to file the lawsuit is next Friday.
At that meeting, board members also said the county district lines have to change, due to the release of the 2010 Census information. However, according to Census figures, Marquette County was one of the few counties in the U.P. to gain population in the past 10 years.
