IRON MOUNTAIN -- With the holiday weekend right around the corner, students in Iron Mountain got a hands-on lesson remembering those who fought for our country.
Third graders spent time putting miniature flags on the graves of veterans at the Iron Mountain Cemetery.
This is the sixth year students have helped with the project which is a nationwide tradition for Memorial Day.
While getting help with the project is a plus, organizers say students learning the true meaning of Memorial Day is the key.
"I think it's very important to instill in the children what these veterans have sacrificed and what they really mean to us and our freedom," said Dickinson County V.A. Director Chuck Lantz. "It's really, really important to me to instill in these kids what those veterans really mean to us."
Lantz says many of the students have taken an interest in honoring the veterans.
